Numerous myths and legends relate to Glastonbury ‘The Isle of Avalon’ where King Arthur is supposedly buried. The valley west of Glastonbury is known as the Avalon Marshes and long held its own secrets. The deep waterlogged peat deposits have miraculously preserved fragile evidence of prehistoric life for thousands of years until their discovery by peat diggers and archaeologists. These wooden trackways, canoes, lake villages, ritual sites and everyday items form the most complete picture of prehistoric life discovered anywhere in the country.

In the Romano-British period we see the beginning of modern life, with huge industries, crime, corruption and enormous wealth in the hands of a few, although they didn’t all live long enough to spend it. The Medieval period was dominated by ecclesiastical lords who owned the wetlands, but spiritual matters went hand in hand with greed, jealousy and violence.

The final ‘improvement’ of the wetlands took many centuries of effort and it was only the latter of the 20th century that the seasonal floodwaters were tamed and the 7,000 year old association of local people with a watery landscape was broken. The landscape and way of life of just 70 years ago appears like another age, fading slowly from memory and consciousness, but the ever-changing story of the Avalon Marshes goes on. If the current global warming predictions are correct who knows what will be in the next chapter?
